Summary

West Bengal’s 2026–27 Budget has earmarked ₹100 crore to install two lakh rooftop solar systems under the PM Surya Ghar scheme, alongside plans for an Open Access policy to accelerate renewable energy adoption across the state.

The West Bengal Government has announced an ambitious renewable energy programme in its 2026–27 Budget, targeting the installation of two lakh rooftop solar systems under the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana.

Presenting the Budget, Swapan Dasgupta announced an allocation of ₹100 crore for the initiative, which aims to promote clean energy adoption, reduce household electricity bills, and strengthen energy security across the state. An additional power subsidy of ₹5,000 has also been announced for SC/ST families to encourage wider participation in the scheme.

The state government also unveiled plans to introduce an Open Access policy to encourage greater solar power generation and consumption. The proposed policy is expected to improve access to affordable clean energy for industries while supporting West Bengal’s climate and sustainability goals.

Alongside its renewable energy initiatives, the Budget proposes the development of a greenfield airport near Kalyani in Nadia district, requiring around 1,000–1,500 acres of land. The project forms part of a broader aviation expansion plan that also includes proposed airports at Purulia, Malda, and Balurghat under the UDAN regional connectivity scheme.

The announcements were made as part of West Bengal’s ₹4.39 lakh crore Budget for FY 2026–27, which places significant emphasis on renewable energy expansion, infrastructure development, and long-term economic growth.
