

Bondada Engineering has won an EPC contract from NTPC REL for a 16.7 MW/100 MWh Vanadium Redox Flow Battery project at Khavda Solar Park, India's largest grid-scale VRFB project.
Bondada Engineering has received a Notification of Award (NoA) from NTPC Renewable Energy Limited (NTPC REL) for the engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) of a 16.7 MW/100 MWh Vanadium Redox Flow Battery (VRFB) Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) at Khavda Solar Park in Gujarat.
Tendered in February 2026, the project has been awarded after five months and represents Bondada Engineering’s first grid-scale VRFB project. It is also the largest Vanadium Redox Flow Battery energy storage project awarded in India to date, marking a significant milestone in the country’s long-duration energy storage (LDES) landscape.
Under the contract, Bondada Engineering will execute the complete EPC package, while Delectrik Systems Pvt Ltd will serve as the technology partner for the project.
Delectrik Systems has previously collaborated with NTPC on flow battery projects. In 2023, the company secured a contract from NTPC Energy Technology Research Alliance (NETRA) to develop a 3 MWh VRFB-based Battery Energy Storage System, which was commissioned during the first half of 2025 at the NETRA campus in Greater Noida in partnership with Rays Power Infra.
The Khavda project will utilise Vanadium Redox Flow Battery technology, a long-duration energy storage solution that offers several advantages over conventional Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) batteries. Unlike LFP systems, which generally have an operational life of 12 to 15 years and rely heavily on imported battery cells, VRFB technology offers a service life exceeding 25 years, high intrinsic safety, minimal performance degradation under frequent charge-discharge cycles and lower operating costs.
The technology also supports India’s objective of reducing import dependence, as the country possesses domestic vanadium resources that can strengthen indigenous energy storage manufacturing and enhance long-term energy security.
The scope of work includes the supply, installation and commissioning of a fully integrated BESS connected to the 33 kV pooling substation of the Khavda Solar Park. Bondada Engineering will also prepare installation and implementation plans using site-specific data provided by the project owner.
In addition, the company will undertake comprehensive operations and maintenance (O&M) of the battery storage system for 10 years after successful commissioning. The contract also covers grid compliance studies, reactive power compensation and power quality compliance up to the 400 kV grid interconnection point at the NTPC REL switchyard.
The award comes as India accelerates deployment of battery energy storage systems to support its expanding renewable energy capacity. The Government of India has set a target of installing approximately 236 GWh of BESS capacity by 2030, compared with the country’s current installed capacity of around 3.3 GWh.
Bondada Engineering said the project strengthens its presence in the rapidly growing energy storage sector and aligns with its strategy of delivering advanced long-duration energy storage solutions. The company added that it will continue to invest in next-generation clean energy technologies to support India’s energy transition and create long-term value for stakeholders.
