Uttar Pradesh reportedly crossed nine lakh rooftop solar installations by October 16, 2026, according to a report published by The Times of India. However, the precise milestone could not be independently verified against a dated official installation dashboard during this research. The figure should therefore be treated as a reported milestone rather than an independently confirmed government total.
The installations are associated with the wider push to expand residential rooftop solar under the Pradhan Mantri Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana. The scheme, launched in February 2024, aims to support rooftop solar installations across one crore households nationally. Uttar Pradesh’s scheme booklet sets a state target of 25 lakh households, placing the reported nine-lakh milestone in the context of a larger deployment programme.
The scheme combines central financial assistance with additional support from the Uttar Pradesh government for eligible residential consumers. According to UPNEDA’s scheme booklet, central assistance is set at ₹30,000 per kW for the first 2 kW, with additional central assistance of ₹18,000 for the next kW. The state subsidy is ₹15,000 per kW up to a maximum of ₹30,000. The booklet lists total assistance of up to ₹1.08 lakh for eligible residential rooftop systems, subject to the scheme’s conditions.
Rooftop solar allows households to generate electricity at the point of consumption, potentially reducing purchases from the grid. UPNEDA’s guidance estimates that a 1 kW rooftop system can generate around four to five units of electricity per day, although actual output varies with sunlight, shading, system orientation and other site conditions. Surplus electricity may be exported to the grid and adjusted through the applicable net-metering arrangements.
The reported installation milestone indicates the scale of rooftop solar adoption in Uttar Pradesh, but the exact installed capacity, employment generated and financial value of electricity produced require separate verification. Those figures have not been included here because an official, dated source substantiating them could not be established in this research.
