Oriana Power has secured two Letters of Award from Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL) to establish a combined 900 MW/1,800 MWh Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) capacity in Maharashtra. The awards, dated September 18, 2026, have an estimated aggregate value of ₹3,870 crore over 15 years, excluding GST.
The projects are split between two different grid locations and tariff structures. One award covers a 500 MW/1,000 MWh standalone BESS at Maharashtra State Electricity Transmission Company Limited (MSETCL) substations, with a tariff of ₹2.38 lakh per MW per month. The second covers 400 MW/800 MWh at MSEDCL substations at ₹2.40 lakh per MW per month.
The combined award represents 45% of MSEDCL's original 2,000 MW/4,000 MWh tender capacity. MSEDCL's tender was structured around tariff-based competitive bidding for large-scale storage projects, with the selected systems intended to support electricity storage and dispatch as required by the utility.
A notable feature of the award is its long-term revenue structure. The projects will operate under Battery Energy Storage Purchase Agreements (BESPAs) for 15 years from their respective Commercial Operation Dates. However, the commissioning dates have not yet been finalized because the respective BESPAs are still to be executed.
The two projects are valued at approximately ₹2,142 crore for the 500 MW/1,000 MWh award and ₹1,728 crore for the 400 MW/800 MWh award. Oriana Power expects about ₹324 crore in Viability Gap Funding (VGF), based on the current estimated project cost. The awards were secured through tariff-based global competitive bidding followed by an e-reverse auction under the Power System Development Fund (PSDF) framework.
The 400 MW/800 MWh installation at MSEDCL substations is also linked to Maharashtra's Mukhyamantri Saur Krushi Vahini Yojana 2.0, which focuses on decentralized solarization of agricultural feeders. This gives the storage award a direct connection with the state's broader effort to integrate decentralized renewable generation into its electricity distribution system.
The project comes as Maharashtra's distribution utility increases its reliance on battery storage to manage a power system with growing renewable generation. MSEDCL's original tender sought 4 GWh of storage, while the Central Electricity Authority has identified BESS as an increasingly important resource for meeting future peak-demand and renewable-integration requirements.
For Oriana Power, the awards expand its utility-scale BESS portfolio while adding a long-duration contractual framework to its storage business. The company's earlier disclosures have identified BESS as a growing part of its renewable-energy portfolio, alongside solar EPC, generation and other clean-energy activities.
