L&T’s Renewables business has secured a ₹5,000-10,000 crore Middle East contract for three four-hour BESS projects with a combined 6 GWh capacity.
Larsen & Toubro (L&T) has secured a major battery energy storage contract in the Middle East, with its Renewables business set to deliver three projects offering a combined 6 GWh of storage capacity. The order places L&T among the companies participating in the region’s rapidly expanding large-scale energy storage market. L&T has categorised the contract as a major order in the ₹5,000 crore to ₹10,000 crore range. The company has not disclosed the customer or the precise location of the three projects.
The portfolio will comprise three four-hour BESS installations, giving the projects a combined discharge capability of 6 GWh. The systems will be used to store electricity when demand is lower and release it during periods of higher consumption, enabling renewable generation to be shifted to times when it has greater value to the grid.
The storage facilities will employ liquid-cooled battery technology, which provides thermal management capabilities suited to high-capacity installations. Such systems can help maintain operating conditions within the battery packs while supporting safety, performance and long-term system reliability. L&T’s responsibility will extend beyond the battery equipment itself. The company will also develop the grid connection infrastructure, including pooling substations and underground cable systems required to integrate the BESS facilities with the electricity network.
The scale of the order reflects the growing requirement for energy storage across the Middle East. The region is rapidly adding utility-scale solar capacity, particularly in markets with high levels of solar irradiation. As this generation increases, large-duration batteries can help move excess daytime solar production into evening and other high-demand periods.
Four-hour storage systems are particularly suited to this application because they can provide sustained discharge rather than only short-duration grid balancing. In addition to energy shifting, the batteries can offer fast-response services that help manage changes in electricity supply and demand and support overall grid stability.
The contract adds to L&T’s growing involvement in the Middle East’s clean energy infrastructure. The company’s capabilities span renewable generation, battery storage and the electrical infrastructure required to connect large projects to power networks, allowing it to participate across multiple stages of energy transition projects.
The integration of storage and grid infrastructure within the same contract also reflects the changing requirements of large renewable energy developments. As solar penetration rises, batteries, substations and transmission connections increasingly need to be planned together to ensure renewable electricity can be delivered when required.
With 6 GWh spread across three projects, the latest award gives L&T a substantial new platform in the international BESS market and reinforces the Middle East as an increasingly important market for large-scale storage deployment.
