The milestone highlights continued growth across utility-scale, rooftop and hybrid solar segments.

India’s installed solar power capacity reached 164.59 GW by the end of July 2026, reinforcing solar energy’s position as the largest contributor to the country’s renewable energy expansion.

According to the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), the country added 2,442.75 MW of solar capacity during July 2026, taking cumulative solar installations during the first seven months of the year to 28.78 GW. The strong pace of installations reflects sustained investment activity, faster project execution and growing demand for clean energy across utility-scale, residential, commercial and industrial segments.

Ground-mounted solar projects continue to dominate India’s solar market, accounting for 122.57 GW of installed capacity. Grid-connected rooftop solar capacity has reached 30.74 GW, while hybrid solar projects contribute 4.77 GW and off-grid solar installations account for 6.51 GW.

The latest milestone highlights the increasing importance of solar power in India’s electricity generation mix. Solar now represents the largest share of the country’s renewable energy capacity and has become a key driver of progress towards India’s long-term clean energy and decarbonisation targets.

Rooftop solar has emerged as one of the fastest-growing segments of the market, supported by policy initiatives and financial incentives that have accelerated residential solar adoption. At the same time, utility-scale projects continue to account for the majority of new capacity additions, while hybrid renewable projects are expanding to improve grid flexibility and renewable energy utilisation.

The rapid expansion of solar capacity has also strengthened India’s broader renewable energy sector. As of 31 July 2026, the country’s total renewable energy capacity stood at 291.73 GW, while total non-fossil fuel-based installed electricity generation capacity exceeded 300 GW.

The growth in solar installations has increased the need for investment in transmission infrastructure, grid modernisation and energy storage deployment. As renewable energy penetration rises, battery energy storage systems, hybrid renewable projects and interstate transmission networks are becoming increasingly important for reliable integration of variable renewable power.

Industry analysts expect the strong installation momentum to continue through the remainder of 2026, supported by a robust pipeline of utility-scale solar projects, rooftop solar expansion and hybrid renewable developments.

With installed solar capacity now exceeding 164 GW, India continues to strengthen its position as one of the world’s fastest-growing solar markets and a major global renewable energy leader.
