Germany has awarded 2.299 GW of ground-mounted solar capacity in its March 2026 auction after receiving 4.622 GW of bids. Bavaria secured the largest allocation, while the average awarded price fell to 4.94 ct/kWh.

Germany has awarded 2.299 GW of ground-mounted solar capacity in its latest renewable energy auction, with the tender significantly oversubscribed as developers submitted bids totalling more than twice the capacity on offer. The results underline continued investment interest in utility-scale solar as Germany accelerates renewable energy deployment.

The Federal Network Agency (Bundesnetzagentur) received 532 bids totalling 4.622 GW against an advertised tender volume of approximately 2.295 GW. A total of 268 bids representing 2.299 GW were awarded, while 39 bids were excluded from the process.

Awarded bid prices ranged from 3.99 ct/kWh to 5.10 ct/kWh, with a volume-weighted average of 4.94 ct/kWh. The average was slightly below the 5.00 ct/kWh recorded in the previous round, indicating continued competitive pressure among developers. Bavaria secured the largest allocation, with 693 MW across 106 awards, followed by Lower Saxony with 340 MW and Baden-Württemberg with 333 MW. Projects located along motorways and railway corridors accounted for the largest share of awarded capacity, with 123 awards totalling 1.026 GW.

Projects on agricultural and grassland areas in disadvantaged regions accounted for another 760 MW across 73 awards. The auction also recorded strong participation from so-called special solar installations, which received 59 awards totalling 439 MW. These projects combine solar electricity generation with another land use, such as agriculture.

The latest results follow a series of competitive solar auctions in Germany. The sustained oversubscription indicates strong developer interest in the country’s utility-scale solar market despite challenges related to grid availability, land, permitting and project development costs.

Ground-mounted solar projects are expected to remain an important component of Germany’s capacity expansion alongside rooftop installations. The continued growth of utility-scale PV will, however, increase the need for transmission investment, grid flexibility and energy storage to accommodate rising volumes of variable renewable generation. The latest allocation is expected to add further momentum to Germany’s utility-scale solar pipeline and support its broader clean energy transition.
