Australia’s federal Cheaper Home Batteries Programme has surpassed 500,000 battery installations, marking a major milestone in the country’s expansion of distributed energy storage. More than 507,000 households, small businesses and community organisations have installed battery systems under the programme since its launch in July 2025.

The programme provides an upfront discount of around 30% on eligible small-scale battery systems connected to new or existing rooftop solar installations. The incentive encourages consumers to store surplus solar generation during the day and use it when electricity demand and prices are higher.

More than three-quarters of installations have been deployed in outer-suburban and regional communities, highlighting strong adoption beyond Australia’s major urban centres. Western Sydney has recorded particularly rapid uptake, with several local areas climbing the national rankings for battery installations.

The programme has also driven growth in Australia’s battery installation workforce. The number of accredited battery installers has more than doubled since the scheme began, reaching 8,846, supporting increased demand for installation, electrical services and energy management solutions.

The rapid growth of residential storage is beginning to influence electricity demand patterns. Home batteries allow consumers to store excess rooftop solar power and use it after sunset, reducing reliance on grid electricity during evening peak periods. At scale, the aggregated storage capacity can also provide wider benefits for grid management.

The programme underwent changes in 2026, including adjustments to incentives for larger battery systems. From May, the incentive structure was revised to provide stronger support for the first 14 kWh of eligible capacity, with progressively lower support for additional capacity. The changes have contributed to a shift in consumer preference towards smaller battery systems.

The Australian Government expects the programme to continue supporting significant growth in residential and small-scale battery deployment. Current projections indicate that more than two million Australians could install batteries by 2030, potentially adding around 40 GWh of distributed storage capacity.

The expansion is also creating opportunities for virtual power plants (VPPs) and other distributed energy management models. As more battery systems become digitally connected, aggregated storage can provide grid services, manage demand and support the integration of increasing volumes of rooftop solar.

The 500,000-installation milestone highlights the growing role of distributed battery storage in Australia’s energy transition. With rooftop solar already widely adopted, the rapid growth of household batteries is creating a larger flexible energy resource while giving consumers greater control over how and when they use renewable electricity.
